As a StoryAthlete, I prepare for the unexpected because nothing ever goes as planned. Nor as anticipated. My Lesser Self craves certainty and predictability because those things are safe. Comfortable. Not scary and doesn’t trigger the imagination. The problem with that? Growth only happens outside of our comfort zone. Which is where the unexpected comes in. So, I expect it. I prepare for it. Only through this preparation does my obstacle immunity expand.
Certainty. Predictability. Comfort. There’s something to be said for such a life. And that can be summed up in one word for me: Boring! Now, there are some people who are wired differently, and I’m grateful for them. I love my bookkeeper, because he loves to do a job that I don’t. And he is one of those who chooses predictability and safety over growth. The world needs both kinds of people.
Me? I prefer growth, with all its chaotic messiness. Over the last 3 days, I’ve watched our first clutch of quail eggs hatch. Four hatched with deformities – intestines hanging out, legs misshapen, etc. It was sad to see them. But to see the other 30+ chicks pip, then zip, out of their shells was so incredible. Life is an adventure, and to live it to the fullest, you have to embrace the wild ride, stretch out of your comfort zone and continually be open to new situations, new people, new skills.
